VALERIU CAMPAN Biographical Note Valeriu Campan was born in Romania, in 1956. He graduated from the Bucharest Film and Theatre Academy in 1981, with a Degree in Cinematography. In late 1983, he escaped the Ceausescu regime and, after spending six months in an Austrian refugee camp, arrived in Melbourne, where he currently lives. As director of photography, Valeriu has worked on feature films, short dramas, documentaries, music videos, commercials, in Romania and Australia. He has also produced and directed television documentaries and received a number of awards, including the ACS Award for Best Cinematography in a Documentary and the AFI nomination for Best Cinematography (Non-Feature) . As photographer, he had a number of solo exhibitions, participated in a variety of international exhibitions under FIAP patronage, and travelled extensively on photographic assignments around the world, receiving a number of awards in international and Australian competitions including Australian Press Photographer of the Year. Samples of his work can be seen in this on-line gallery. Valeriu has lectured at the Australian Film, Radio & Television School (Sydney), the Swinburne Institute of Technology (current VCA). Valeriu’s recent work as DoP includes: "More Great Vegetarian Dishes" and Elizabeth Chong cooking series; "Once Were Monks", a four parts documentary series revolving around the St. Francis Church in Melbourne; “East Timor – Birth of a Nation”, an award winning documentary; “The Life and Times of Malcolm Fraser” and Trafficked - a Film Australia/SBS one hour documentary shot in Thailand and Cambodia. Other completed projects are "Singles Club" (SBS documentary) and “Let Me Not”, a feature film with first broadcast on Channel Nine in January 2007. One of the current projects is "Suite for Fleur" a feature film planned for production in October. |
